The Lagos State Police have arrested a man seen in a widely circulated video allegedly assaulting a toddler who was unable to read.
The footage, which spread across social media platforms, showed the man repeatedly hitting the child on the head and body with what appeared to be a charger cable.
The incident triggered public outrage, with Nigerians calling for the suspect to be identified, arrested and prosecuted over the alleged abuse.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying the suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, after the agency received a report concerning the incident and made contact with the child’s mother.
According to the agency, the mother told officials that the matter had already been reported at the Imota Police Station.
“Upon contacting officers at the Family Support Unit, the Agency was informed that the survivor’s mother had initially reported the matter to the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency.
“Following the report, the alleged perpetrator was apprehended on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and is currently in police custody, as the matter has now been escalated for further investigation.
“The survivor and her mother have also been referred to the General Hospital for immediate medical attention and further assessment,” the statement read.
