FG to Deepen Engagement With Catholic Bishops on Security, Economy – SGF Akume
The Federal Government has pledged to deepen its engagement with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and other key stakeholders in efforts to address the country’s social, economic and security challenges.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, disclosed this in a statement personally signed by him on Wednesday.
Akume said the government would sustain consultations with the Catholic bishops and other stakeholders in pursuit of peace, national unity and sustainable development.
According to him, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recognises that lasting solutions to Nigeria’s challenges require sustained partnerships with faith-based organisations, traditional institutions, civil society organisations, the private sector and citizens.
He said the government remained open to constructive dialogue and honest counsel, noting that recent discussions with the Catholic bishops covered critical national issues, including security, the economy, education, public services, electoral credibility and religious freedom.
Akume also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to democratic principles, stressing that the Federal Government neither seeks nor supports the establishment of a one-party state.
He further assured that the government would continue to respect the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The SGF acknowledged the significant contributions of the Catholic Church to national development and assured that the government would continue to work closely with the church and other faith-based organisations in advancing the country’s interests.
He said the renewed engagement was part of the government’s broader commitment to inclusive governance, dialogue and collaboration in tackling Nigeria’s challenges.
