Fake DSS Operative Arrested in Abuja with Tactical Uniform, Imitation Pistol
The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man, identified as Moferewa Maiye, for allegedly impersonating an officer of the Service and using a DSS tactical uniform and an imitation pistol to intimidate and extort members of the public in Abuja.
Maiye, who claimed to be from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was arrested at his hideout around NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, Abuja, following intelligence-led surveillance by DSS operatives.
He was reportedly found wearing a DSS tactical uniform and carrying what was identified as a fake pistol at the time of his arrest.
A security source said the DSS acted on credible intelligence that the suspect had been using the uniform and imitation firearm to intimidate commuters and motorists and allegedly extort money from them.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly claimed that the DSS uniform belonged to his late brother, identified as Monday Maiye, who he said was a personnel of the Service before his death several years ago.
The suspect remains in custody and is being interrogated as investigators seek to establish how he obtained the DSS uniform and other items in his possession.
The investigation is also expected to determine how long he had allegedly been involved in impersonating security personnel and whether he acted alone or had accomplices.
The arrest highlights the security concerns surrounding the activities of individuals who impersonate law enforcement and security personnel to intimidate members of the public and facilitate criminal activities.
The DSS is expected to proceed with further investigation before determining the appropriate legal action against the suspect.
