The Benue State Government has announced plans to expand the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as part of efforts to reduce energy costs and stimulate economic growth in the state.
Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia said the state was exploring opportunities in the CNG sector to provide more affordable energy options for residents, businesses and transport operators.
Governor Alia stated this while declaring open a three-day awareness workshop on the Presidential CNG Initiative, themed “The Game Changer,” at the Rev. Fr. Alia Ultra Modern Conference Hall, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) headquarters, Makurdi.
The governor said the initiative would support the state’s economic development while reducing dependence on conventional fuel sources.
As part of the effort, the state has begun creating awareness around CNG adoption and conversion, with officials encouraging residents and relevant operators to embrace the alternative energy source.
The Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Dr Joseph Ter, said the government was preparing to commence vehicle conversions after the awareness programme. He disclosed that he had converted his official vehicle to CNG as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to the initiative.
The development aligns with the Federal Government’s broader CNG programme aimed at reducing transportation and energy costs through increased use of domestically available gas.
Benue’s move is expected to support lower operating costs for businesses and transport operators while creating opportunities around CNG conversion, infrastructure and related services.
