Bandit Leader Ado Aleiro Loses Son, 8 Relatives, 30 Motorcycles in Katsina Encounter
Notorious bandit leader Ado Aleiro has suffered a major setback following the reported death of his son, eight other family members and about 30 members of his gang in a recent encounter at Doma village in Katsina State.
Intelligence obtained by Zagazola Makama indicated that the losses had significantly weakened the operational capacity and mobility of Aleiro’s criminal network.
According to the intelligence report dated August 9, all the estimated 30 motorcycles deployed by the gang during the encounter reportedly failed to return, with their occupants said to have been neutralised.
The report also stated that Aleiro’s son and eight other members of his family were among those killed in the encounter.
The loss of the motorcycles is considered particularly significant because they are a major means of transportation for bandit groups operating across the North-West, enabling rapid movement, logistics and attacks in difficult-to-access terrain.
Following the reported losses, intelligence indicated that Aleiro was, as of 3:51 p.m. on Sunday, travelling alone on a motorcycle around the Sakya Dutse, Higi and Asaula areas.
His movements were reportedly being monitored as security operatives sought to establish his next destination and assess the status of his remaining network.
Further intelligence indicated that Aleiro was also concerned about the vulnerability of a proposed site for his illegal mining activities at Gidan Buhari, in Chadiya Ward of Tsafe Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
He was reportedly apprehensive that the location could come under attack by local vigilantes, known as Yansakai, operating from Tsafe town.
The concern is believed to have heightened following the weakening of his network and the possible exposure of some of its remaining operational positions.
Security sources said the reported losses could provide an opportunity for security agencies to intensify operations against the weakened network and prevent surviving members from regrouping.
The destruction or loss of the motorcycles could further constrain the gang’s ability to move rapidly, transport personnel and supplies, launch attacks and evade security forces across the region’s difficult terrain.
The development comes amid sustained military operations against bandit groups in Zamfara, Katsina and neighbouring states under Operation FANSAN YANMA.
Security agencies are expected to maintain surveillance on Aleiro’s movements while assessing the full extent of the losses suffered by his network.
Authorities have also been advised to strengthen coordination among troops and other security agencies operating in the affected areas, particularly around Tsafe and other locations where the group may attempt to regroup.
