Atiku mourns Olu Jacobs, says Nigeria has lost cultural icon

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed grief over the death of veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs, describing his passing at 84 as a loss that extends beyond the country’s film industry.

In a condolence message posted on his official social media page on Wednesday, Atiku described Jacobs as “an institution, a cultural icon and one of the finest ambassadors of Nigeria’s creative spirit.”

The former vice president recalled the actor’s enduring presence in the lives of generations of Nigerians, particularly through his memorable performances, distinctive voice and longstanding contribution to the entertainment sector.

According to Atiku, Jacobs had established himself as a prominent figure in the arts before Nollywood gained international recognition, with his career helping to lay a foundation for many of the actors who followed.

He added that the late actor’s influence went beyond his ability to entertain, noting that the characters he portrayed became woven into the memories of Nigerians who watched him while growing up.

“The curtain may have fallen on an extraordinary life, but the characters he gave us, the standards he set and the generations he inspired will continue to speak for him,” Atiku said.

Atiku extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and other members of the Jacobs family.

He also expressed sympathy to colleagues across Nollywood, the broader African creative community and admirers of the late actor around the world.

The ADC presidential candidate prayed for the repose of Jacobs’ soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.
