The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has warned that public universities across Nigeria could face a total shutdown if the Federal Government fails to address outstanding salary and related payment issues.
The threat is contained in a statement by the union’s president, Christopher Piwuna, on Friday.
The union said its members had continued to work despite unresolved financial obligations, stressing that universities could not function effectively under prolonged non-payment.
“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to fully and comprehensively address issues bordering on the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics, ASUU-NEC will not accept any blame for calling out its members on a nationwide strike action within the shortest time possible.” The union warned.
ASUU maintained that the government must urgently resolve the outstanding issues and honour agreements reached with university workers to prevent another disruption of academic activities.
The union warned that failure to meet its demands could trigger industrial action nationwide, affecting students and academic programmes across public universities.
