Human rights lawyer and political commentator, Deji Adeyanju, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately implement the Supreme Court’s recent judgment on key provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
Adeyanju, in a statement issued on Monday, urged the commission to remove from its official portal the names of candidates of political parties affected by the judgment.
Adeyanju said the commission is constitutionally bound to give effect to decisions of the apex court, citing Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The Supreme Court recently restored Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2) of the Electoral Act, which relate to political party membership registers and the nomination of candidates.
Adeyanju specifically called on INEC to remove from its official portal the names of candidates affected by the judgment and take other necessary administrative steps to enforce the ruling.
He urged the electoral commission to act without delay or selective implementation, stressing that all authorities are required to comply with decisions of the Supreme Court.
The call comes amid differing interpretations of the judgment and concerns over its possible implications for some political parties and candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
