The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for not attending the signing of the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adebayo described Tinubu’s absence as disappointing, arguing that the President’s decision raised questions about his commitment to promoting a peaceful electoral process.
The SDP candidate said all presidential candidates should demonstrate their willingness to uphold peace and respect democratic principles before, during and after the elections.
He stressed that political leaders have a responsibility to discourage violence and ensure that electoral contests are conducted within the bounds of the law.
The peace accord was signed by representatives of political parties and presidential candidates as part of efforts to promote peaceful campaigns and credible elections in 2027.
Adebayo urged political actors to prioritise national interest over personal or partisan ambitions, saying Nigeria could not afford violence during the electoral process.
He called on candidates and their supporters to respect the outcome of the election and pursue grievances through lawful channels.
